Executive Director
The Lowell Humane Society, was founded in 1873 and is one of the oldest animal welfare agencies in the nation. We are a
nonprofit charitable organization totally supported by voluntary donations and dedicated to the promotion of animal welfare
throughout the Greater Lowell Area. The Lowell Humane Society is an open-admission shelter serving three thousand
animals annually in the Greater Lowell, Merrimack Valley and NorthWest regions. As the Society celebrates its 135th
Anniversary this year, we continue to carry out our mission to prevent cruelty to animals, provide care for homeless and
distressed animals and educate the public in proper animal care. The Society seeks a dynamic Executive Director committed
to the field of animal welfare. It is vital that this individual have proven experience in staff management, financial oversight,
operational management, fundraising, public relations and strategic planning.
Job Summary
The Executive Director (ED) has the overall responsibility for the operation of the shelter and its staff. The ED will oversee
the management of the shelter’s finances and ensures that its mission is fully carried out. The Executive Director develops
and implements strategic plans for the various programs of the Lowell Humane Society. We are seeking an enthusiastic
individual who will develop a strong community presence and maximize fundraising opportunities. They need to possess
excellent communication skills and not only manage the shelter, but supervise and empower the shelter employees.
Job Responsibilities
The executive director position requires excellent interpersonal skills so that they may represent the Lowell Humane Society
externally in ways which foster the best possible relations with the public, actual and potential donors, volunteers, local
businesses, the media, and granting agencies. This individual will serve as the organization’s spokesperson, along with the
President of the Board. A solid understanding of nonprofit fund development principles is desired; the Humane Society
seeks to enhance donations, donors & funding sources through effective stewardship.
Strong management skills and outstanding writing ability will be required for the following duties:
- Personnel Management (7 employees: 6 Shelter staff and 1 Business Manager)
- Financial Oversight (Budgeting, short range and long range planning)
- Operational Management (Information Management software, PetPoint)
- Fundraising (Website content, newsletters, direct mail, grant writing, sponsorships, etc.)
- Public Relations (Public speaking, media relations, event coordination)
- Strategic Planning (Short and long range development, evaluation and implementation)
Required Skills and Experience
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent
3 years staff supervisory experience
Proven track record in fundraising & financial oversight
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Internet
Must be accurate and detail-oriented, with strong organizational and time management skills
Understanding and interest in current animal advocacy issues
Animal handling skills for purposes of shelter support in absence of supervisors
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy animal shelter environment
Local travel, some evenings and weekends are required

Full-Time Adoption Counselor/Animal Caregivers
Job Summary:
The Animal Caregiver will provide humane care and treatment of shelter animals. Duties include cleaning and sanitizing
cages, animal adoptions and surrenders, administering medical treatments, answering phones, filing and conducting business
transactions. The Animal Caregiver will also assist in the coordination and implementation of shelter programs and special
events. Varying work schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Qualifications:
Prior animal care experienced required. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, be able to multi-task in a fast paced
environment, possess exceptional customer service skills and have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
