Some of the pets we care for at Lowell Humane Society are super easy peasy, in and out and find a home quickly. Others, need a bit more. The odds were already stacked against him, he had spent months in another shelter, overlooked time and time again. He had no history, he had been found as a stray. They reached out to us to ask if we could give him a change of scenery and we transferred him to LHS. He found a new home immediately- but after six months they determined it really wasn’t the best match after all.

When a pet is returned to us- obviously we can be a bit disappointed. Especially if they come back with a bite history. We keep positive by realizing it is an opportunity to gather more information. For Scruffy- it meant we knew he would bond hard with someone and would prefer to live in a quiet home with just one person. We also determined he would do best with someone willing to keep him on anxiety medication- with so many transitions, he needed a little help to tone down his anxious nature.

He met many people during his second stay with us, none were a good match until Ellen.

Ellen was a great adopter- she listened to his history, asked great questions and really considered all of the information we provided. She learned the good, the bad, the ugly about Scruffy’s past and decided she would like to give him a chance to shine in her home. And shine he does! We are nearing a month of Scruffy (now Sully!) living with Ellen and we’re excited to hear that things are going well! He’s had a fancy new haircut and they are enamored with each other.

Not all dogs with a bite history are good candidates to place in a new home. Every situation needs to be considered carefully to ensure safety for the pet and the people around them. When I saw Ellen’s google review in my inbox- I held my breathe-were we wrong? Did something happen? NOPE– Ellen just waned to share her happy tail.

Sully & Ellen are just one of the 1000+ happy tails we created the past year. Thanks for sharing your review, Ellen!
